With an area of 83.858 sq km Austria consists of 9 independent federal states (Burgenland, Carinthia, Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Styria, Tyrol, Vorarlberg and Vienna) with their own provincial governments. The federal legislation is exercised by the national council (Nationalrat) together with the Upper House of Parliament (Bundesrat) – the two chambers of Parliament. Austria is situated in Central Europe. Austria is a principally mountainous country. Its border is twisted by eight other European countries, namely Italy, Switzerland, the Principality of Liechtenstein, Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia. Vienna is the capital of Austria and lies on the Danube River and is partly surrounded by the hills of the Vienna Woods.

Austria enjoys a reasonable continental climate featuring all four distinct seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter. Summers are usually warm and pleasant with cooler nights; winters are sunny, with reliable and frequent snowfalls. The weather is variable throughout the year. However, in summer rainfalls are frequently heavy and of short duration only. Winters are rather cold in the North-East and can be bleached up by the common and heavy foehn. The greater part of Austria lies in the cool/temperate climate zone in which moist westerly winds dominate. With over half of the country conquered by the Alps, the alpine climate is the prime one.

Austria is the 12th richest country in the world in terms of GDP (Gross domestic product) per capita and having a well-developed social market economy, and a high standard of living. Earlier Many of Austria's largest industry firms were nationalised; in recent years, however, privatization has reduced state holdings to a level equivalent to other European economies..
