The Social Index was developed by Harvard professor Michael Porter to measure the progress of a country based on its ability to fulfill the needs of its population rather than economic growth. Countries are ranked based on environmental and social measures that are indicative of wellbeing and the availability of opportunities to the common man. Based on the index, it was discovered that although two countries can have the same GDP, they may show different social progress hence different social indices. The top five countries based on this index are discussed below.

Norway

Norway

Norway was ranked the most advanced country in the world ahead of world super powers like the United States and United Kingdom. The global survey that was used to produce the results showed that the country ranked very high in personal freedom and rights. It also scored high for communication with a majority of its population having subscribed to mobile facilities and most people using the internet. While the country is strong on freedom and choice available to the common man, it still has to work on improving its ecosystem sustainability.

Sweden

Sweden

While Sweden ranked low in ecosystem sustainability, it ranked high in personal safety, quality of air water and sanitation. It also ranked high in its medical care. The country ranked very high in opportunity. It ranked very high in personal freedom, choice and personal rights. Its higher education is great and access is free for citizens. This country only needs to remember to do more about shelter and personal rights.

Switzerland

Switzerland

Switzerland may be the home to the rich but it makes sure that even the poorest in the society is considered and well taken care of. The country dropped one place from its position in 2014, however it is still faring well in terms of social advancement compared to many other countries. Although there are many things that are going well for the country such as in the areas of communication, persona rights and choices an water and sanitation, the country still has a lot to do to improve on ecosystem sustainability.

Iceland

Iceland

Iceland came third in 2014 but has dropped to fourth position. Despite its location, the access to communication technologies by the population is very high. The use of internet is very common and available to all. In terms of overall wellness, their food and nutrition habits are well worth emulating. They also ranked high in water and sanitation and personal safety and choice. Total inclusion is also encouraged in the country.

New Zealand

New Zealand

In 2014 New Zealand occupied the first position in the world as the most socially advanced country. In 2015, it has dropped four places but is still among the top. In terms of water and sanitation and personal rights, it is the first country. it also ranks well in basic knowledge and inclusion, however, the country still has some work to do in the area of overall well being as nutrition and ecosystem sustainability ranked low.
