Castles seem like things that only occur in fairly tale books but actually they do exist in real lives. Most of the castles that we see today that have become tourist attractions were probably never built with tourists in mind. These gigantic and impressive buildings were built as fortresses to protect against intruders. They were also used to entertain the honoured guest of Kings, Queens and other royalty. Today, most of these castles are relics but due the history behind them, we take a look at the top largest castles in the world in terms of area covered.

Construction works on this fortress that was used by the Teutonic order to strengthen their control of the Baltic was completed in 1406. This castle that is made of brick was built along the Noga River facilitate easy access to ships coming in from the Baltic Sea. Over the years it was used as one of the residences Polish Kings. After the partition of Poland, during Nazi, Germany, it was used as a retreat centre for the Nazi Youth a youth movement in Nazi Germany. After World War II, the castle was handed back to Poland. The castle occupies a surface area of 143.5 square kilometers

In the beautiful town of Jodpu in Rahjastan, stands one of the largest castles in the world on top of a 400 feet hill. This is the Mehrangarh Fort that was built in 1459 by Rao Jodha after he decided to move his army from Mandore. Tourist attractions include museums, the National Geologic monument which was declared by the Geological Society of India, and the Chamunda Mataji Temple. The temple is occupying a surface area of 81 thousand square meters.

Within the grounds of the castle are gardens, hall churches and a host of other impressive building. The architecture of the building is very characteristic of the style that existed at that time. Today the castle is used as the office of the President of the Czech Republic. It occupies a surface area of more than 66 thousand square kilometers. Site attractions within the castle include the St George’s Basilica and St Vitus Cathedral. It is worth mentioning that some sources site this castle as the largest castle in the world.

This castle was built in the eleventh century after the Norman invasion.  The aim was to protect Norman interest and possibly overlook activities on the River Thames. The castle is on a surface area of a little under 55 thousand square kilometers.

This is one of the largest castles in Europe sitting on top of a hill in the Austrian capital Salzburg.  Work on this castle began in 1007. This castle has always been home to archbishops who at the time wielded a lot of political power. The interior comprises of the Salzburg bull, the golden hall, the bed chamber, and the chapel of Archbishop Leonard Von Keutschach.
