There may be no world wars being fought but yet countries still need armies. Ever since the Germans were defeated by Russia thanks to the large number of the Russian army, it has become obvious that numbers are necessary when it comes to military might. No amount of technology can replace what a huge army can do. Countries differ by military might and sometime, military might means the number of the army. The top five countries with the largest number of army are discussed below.
The Republic of China is home to more than one billion people so it should come as no surprise that it also has the largest army. It needs to protect its people as well as its territorial boundaries. In China, adult males age 18 and above are expected to enlist in the army. However, this rule is not strictly applied since there are more than enough people begging to join the army. The People’s Liberation Army, as the Chinese military is commonly known, has over 2.2 million soldiers. Although it has the largest army, it is second to the United States in terms of military spending.
United States of America
The United States military rank first in the world when it comes to military spending. The United States previously used conscription to enlist people into the army but this became largely unpopular after the Vietnam War. Today, entry in the army is voluntary. The US army stands at 1.4 million although some argue that this number includes the Marine corp which is not strictly army. This country spends more on military endeavours than any other country and at least 43% of such spending is for international ventures.
India has a large population and its territorial boundaries to protect. India is constantly in frontier problems with countries like China and Pakistan. It is the world largest importer of military weapons importing mainly from Russia. Its army presently stands at 1.3 million soldiers. In terms of military spending, it is ranked 9th in the world. The Indian army is organized like the British army from which it took over.
Ever since the Korean People’s army, the popular name for the North Korean Army , was formed, it has continuously grown in size to it is present 1.1 million man army. Entry into the army is mandatory for males and selective for females. There are many prerequisites and post requirements for all prospective soldiers to fulfill. Most of the challenges faced by this army are with its neighbor South Korea and the United States.
The Russian Federation Armed forces was formed in 1992 after the Soviet Union fell apart. The rnks in the Russian army are similar those that existed during the existence of the Soviet Union except for the rank of Colonel General which is a borrowed appellation from Germany. The army that is made up of 1 million soldiers is under the supreme command of the president of the country. Russia needs its army to maintain its military might and protect its people and territories.
