According to studies done in 2010, the population of Muslims in the world stood at approximately 1.5 billion people. This religion which is the second largest in the world is mostly practiced in Arab countries. While most of the Muslim population can be found in Arab countries, they can still be found in high populations in non Arab countries. Historically, from origin, Indonesians where Hindus and Buddhist but by the 13th century, Islam had become widespread. Today, it is the top ranking country in the world when it comes to Muslim population with an estimated 204 million followers. At least more than 80% of the population is following Islam.

In the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Islam is the official religion with more than 90% of its population being Muslims. This has earned it a place as the second country with the highest population of Muslims which is 178 million people. Sunni Muslims make up the majority of the Muslim population. Other Muslim Fiqhs include the Shias and the Ahmadis although some do not consider the Ahmadis as Muslims. After Iran, Pakistan is the country with the highest number of Shias totaling about 30 million faithful. This country is usually considered as the country that promotes political Islam
The earliest evidence of Islam in India dates back right to the seventh century and was believed to have been brought there by traders coming from Persia and Arabia. Today it is has over 177 million faithful making it the third country with the highest Muslim population. Most of the Muslim population of India lives in the Utar Pradesh region. The main denominations of the religion include the Sunnis who are the majority followed by the Shias. Smaller denominations include the Ahmadiyas and the Quranists.
Bangladesh became a separate state after it divided from Pakistan which had earlier separated from India. Today Bangladesh is the fourth country with the largest Muslim population having a total of 148 million faithful. Just as in India, Islam was introduced by Persian and Arabian merchants. The main denominations of the religion include a majority Sunni population followed by Ahle Hadith, Quranist, a few Shias and even fewer Ahmadiyas.
Islam has been the state religion of Egypt for thousands of years and today it can boast of a Muslim population of 80 million making it the fifth country with the highest Muslim population. A majority of this population are Sunni Muslim with some few Shias and Quranists. There is a significant number of non denominational Muslims.
