When you come from a very big country, your idea about what should be considered a country may mean very large surface areas with thickly populated towns and cities. However, this is not always the case as there are legally recognized countries that are quite small in both land size and population but which are countries in their own rights. In this write-up, we look at some of the smallest countries in mass and population.

The Vatican City

The Vatican City

Right in the heart of the Italian Capital Rome is another country referred to as The Vatican City or to religious adepts the Holy See. This is a country within a country, it has its own government headed by the Pope.  The Vatican also happens to be the seat of the Catholic Church administration. This city that has a lot of reminders about the ancient church is a big tourist attraction drawing millions of visitors every year. It generates financial resources from the church contributions made by church members the world over and also from tourism. This city occupies a surface area of just 0.44 square kilometers.

The Principality of Monaco has France as its neighbor on three borders and the fourth is the beautiful Mediterenean Sea. This country that is a Monarchy is headed by the powerful Prince Albert II. Although the country occupies a limited surface area of approximately 2km, it has a population of just over 35,000 inhabitants.

Monaco is well known as the home to the rich and a lot of high profile events take place here. Monte Carlo a jurisdiction of Monaco is well reputed for the Formula One Grand Prix that holds at the “Circuit de Monaco”. Apart from formula one, it is also a luxury tourist destination wit high end hotels and exotic beaches.

The Republic of Nauru

The Republic of Nauru

Nauru is an egg shaped island with surface area of 21 square kilometers located in the South Pacific. This country that was once known for its phosphate deposits has turned out to become one of the countries in the world with the highest unemployment rate. After the phosphate deposit got depleted, only the government was left to employ its people. As such only a negligible percentage of the population is in employment.  Notwithstanding, it is a beautiful country with many sandy beaches.

Tuvala formerly called the Ellice Islands is another island country in the Pacific Ocean. This former British colony that gained full independence in 1978 is made up of smaller islands occupying just over 26 square kilometers of land area. Although it has some beautiful coral reefs and other island attractions, the difficulty involved in accessing the area has meant that tourism is not fully vibrant.

After all the powerful cities of Italy fell, this is the only one that managed to retain its independence. Today, this country that covers a surface area of 64 square kilometers is completely surrounded by Italy. Surprisingly, it has the lowest unemployment rates in the whole of Europe and its Gross Domestic Product is quite high. Every year, this country receives millions of tourist who come to visit all the medieval ruins especially the recently added UNESCO World Heritage site that is the ancient settlements on the hills of Monte Titano.
