Back in 2002 I spent 3 weeks in Cuba. I consider Cuba to be a must see and back then my itchy feet felt it was an important place to explore because I anticipated that the country would undergo fast and dramatic changes in the Post-Castro era.  Cuba is an absolutely fascinating place and it did not disappoint. It truly was stuck in a time warp. It was amazing to see the beautiful architecture and remnants of the grandeur of their hey-day but I witnessed buildings crumbling right before my eyes.

I read that many people make extra money renting out a room in their home and so when I arrived at the airport, I asked around for help in finding a place to stay. I ended up staying with a family in a fashionable home near the beach in Havana for a few days before joining a tour of the country. I have taken many tours before but this was perhaps the most beneficial in terms of getting exposure to the realities, inner workings and intriguing culture of the place. I’m not sure if I’m allowed to name the company that I went with on this forum, but they took us to many of the places of historical significance which really helped give an understanding of why the country has evolved the way it has. I stayed in homestays for about 80% of the time and lived and ate home cooking with the real people of Cuba. I hope to go again after Fidel kicks the bucket (no offence to Fidel but I expect it has to happen one day) and the country tries to enter the modern era.

Cuba likes a warm, humid climate throughout the year. The best time for visit is during the winter months from November to April. The drizzling season from May to October can be moist. Hurricanes are common from September to October.
