Indonesia & Kalimantan

I have been spending the past few months in Central Kalimantan (home of the Dayak people), in a place just outside Palangka Raya (km 36). Within this area, the jungles of Borneo completely surround us, and being close to the rive Rungan, we have access to see the Orang-utans from the river bank by a boat called a "klotok". So why did I choose Kalimantan? because firstly, it has a very different feeling to Java. having so much forest and jungle around you, I am constantly amongst nature, and most people know going for a walk in the countryside always seems to settle things, and create peace inside. It also seems to be a very mystical place, the Dayak tribe have a strong belief in Jinns (Spirits of the world) so it's interesting to learn about their way of life and culture. So for those of you who have never heard of Kalimantan, come take a look. Be brave and experience something new. The place where I stay has a hotel/resort away from the busy city of Palangkaraya, so its more serene here and plenty of things to do and explore.

Kalimantan is an island of venture and intrigue. Central Kalimantan with an area covering 153,800 square kilometres, mostly jungle but, offers so much for the traveler you see and do. The northern area is rocky and difficult to reach. The central area is dense tropical forest. The southern area is swampy and has many rivers. The climate is hot and humid.

In the local Dayak language, Palangkaraya means ‘holy container’. Palangkaraya can easily be reached from Jakarta, Banjarmasin, Samarinda, Balikpapan and other points on the island by air.

Kuala Kapuas:

It is located at Kapuas River, 40 km from Banjarmasin. A well-known tourist lure is Telo Island, a pleasing fishing village and port. For the adventurer, white-water rafter and nature lovers, there is Gohong Rawai, known for its stunning and demanding rapids.

Sampit is the prime timber port in Kalimantan. The Orchid Park of Pembuangan Hulu is home to a number of rare and beautiful orchid varieties. Hunters can engage in their favourite pastime of hunting park of West Kotawaringin.

Make sure to visit the old Palace of Pangkalanbun, constructed entirely out of ulin (iron wood). It is the only Banjar royal legacy found in Central Kalimantan.
