Holidays In New York
I always look forward to going on holiday because it is a time to relax, take a rest from my busy lifestyle and of course explore a new destination. This year I travelled to New York even though I had been told that this city is usually crowded with tourists and I may not enjoy my holidays. Interestingly, I had the best of times during my stay in New York that I wished I had more time and resources.
Dynamic, vibrant and exciting are some of the terms that I can use to describe this city that is also known as The Big Apple. This city has many remarkable attractions so I had to come up with a plan of how best to make the most of my time there. I had to include shopping because it would be ridiculous to leave this premier shopping destination before checking out some bargains and unique items considering that I am a shopaholic.
I had booked myself a room at Wellington Hotel that is located at the heart of theatre District, a few minutes from Central Park and Times Square. Although the hotel offers excellent service and amenities, it is the prime location that I was attracted to the most as it is close to transport links, shops, restaurants and bars that make it very convenient to move around. One of the amazing discoveries that I made is the you do not have to spend a fortune in order to enjoy holidays in New York because a lot of the outdoor activities are free yet totally fulfilling. For instance, I opted to explore New York City on foot owing to its awesome transport system hence I spared a good sum that I would have used on transport.
My holidays in New York began with a visit to midtown Manhattan that is also the core of this city. It is a great place to be with attractions like the majestic Grand Central station, the sparkling Chrysler building and the iconic empire state building. In fact, the best way to see New York city us by getting magnificent 360 degree panoramic views from the top of the Empire State Building. I purchased an admission ticket that allowed me access to the 86th floor at 320 meters. The high-speed elevators did not allow me to take notice this distance. The observation deck allowed me to have great views of Times Square, Central Park, Brooklyn Bridge, the Flatiron Building, the statue of liberty and the Chrysler building among other attractions. This building also offers a nice view of the New York sun set even though I did not stay here long enough to experience it. Midtown Manhattan is constantly characterized by a buzz of activities so I could not leave without going to Bloomingdale and Macy’s where I indulged in some shopping before settling down for a meal at The View restaurant that revolves at 360 degrees allowing you an awesome view of the city.
I also went to Downtown Manhattan that I can only describe as quirky, cool but wonderfully diverse as it is the multicultural melting point as well as epitome of cutting edge style. This is also where you will find Soho’s high-end boutiques that are ideal especially if you are on a shopping holiday. Also worth checking out is Chinatown that is synonymous with kitsch souvenirs and imitation designer labels. If you are thinking of dining in Chinatown, you can try Shanghai Restaurant that offers some tasty Chinese delicacies. The dumpling soup will leave your taste buds yearning for more. If you are not into Chinese cuisine, you can also consider grabbing some traditional pizza at Little Italy. The Manhattan sky tour was the highlight of my Holidays in New York as I got an aerial view of the city in just about 12 minutes. This flight covers all the major areas including Wall Street, Statue of Liberty, New York harbor, Governor’s island and Ground Zero. I put my photographic skills into use during the thrilling flight and captured great shots of the city.
An alternative to the New York City flight is the Hop on hop off bus tour that allows you to explore every corner of the city. Moreover, there are tour guides on board who will inform as well as entertain you while responding to all the questions that you may have. The good thing about this tour is that the ticket is valid for 24 hours thus you can take this opportunity to explore New York by night just as I did.
I could not resist going to Soho and Tribeca that are known to be populated by some of the wealthy fashionistas that you can think of and I could not resist going there. This area is filled with a wide range of boutiques that target retro-industrial elegance. While here, I was spoilt for choice on whether to purchase clothing items or antiques and art so a got a bit of everything. I also went to the Meatpacking District that is the boiling point of all the activities in New York. Here, you will find just about everything ranging from culture, food, design and fashion. There is no better way to spend the evening here than to watch the sun set while sipping cocktails at the roof top bar of Hotel Gansevoort.
Central Park is another great attraction that comes with numerous things to do and see including the Central Park Zoo and wildlife centre where I enjoyed watching the snow leopards among other animals. I also took time to swim at the public swimming pool and take notice of some of the statues of iconic figures in the history of America like Alice and Wonderland, Balto as well as William Shakespeare. The Obelisk fountain was also another great site to behold. I did not forget to include a visit to what is considered one of New York’s most famous galleries namely the Metropolitan Museum of Art that is home to wide collection of artistic works dating back to hundreds of years ago.
My evenings were not devoid of action as I frequented a number of stylish bars where I sipped cocktails while enjoying some good live music from legendary at BB King Blues Club and Apollo Centre. During my holidays in New York I also discovered another great way of unwinding by going on a statue of Liberty evening cruise. This cruise is quite inspiring as you get o see the Manhattan skyline as the sunsets at the backdrop of the statue of Liberty. I had so much fun during my holidays in New York and I know that that I will visit this city in future. I definitely recommend New York City to every serious traveler.
